my hikes
August 3, 1992 - My third 14er ascent. We did this hike with Mark, David, Denny, Bob. This hike was special in that while we were on the summit of Uncompahgre a man approached Bob asking for help. He had seen the HAM radio antenna sticking out of Bob's backpack and hoped we could help. A friend of theirs had fallen hiking a steep slope on the southwestern side of Uncompahgre and needed to be rescued. Bob spent the next few hours working out a helicopter rescue to come in and help the person. We remained high on Uncompahgre's south ridge til the chopper came and we witnessed the rescue. As we were up there waiting we even saw a forest ranger coming up the trail on a motorbike and asking questions to help.
